- ベネディクトゥスが生涯において手掛けた計3冊の装飾デザイン集である《ヴァリアシオン》、《ヌーヴェル・ヴァリアシオン》、《ルレ》のうち、本作は一番最初に刊行されたものに当たる。20世紀初頭に、ジョルジュ・バルビエやアントワーヌ・ブールデルといった芸術家から、版画職人として厚く信頼を得ていたジャン・ソデ（J. Saudé）が刷りを手がけており、手彩色による孔版刷りの美しいプレート集となっている。ベネディクトゥスは動植物などをモティーフにした装飾的な構成を得意とし、その作品には時代を経るにつれて幾何学的・抽象的な方向へと変化していく傾向が認められる。本作は植物の曲線をそのまま生かしたような、彼の初期における有機的な表現が見受けられるものとなっている。プレート20枚すべてが揃った完品であり、表紙の状態も含めて極めて良好といえる。This is the first of three books of decorative designs Benedictus produced during his lifetime: "Variations," "Nouvelles Variations," and "Relais," all of which were printed by Jean Saudé, an early 20th-century printmaker trusted by artists such as Georges Barbier and Antoine Bourdelle. Benedictus excelled at decorative compositions based on motifs of plants and animals, and his work tended to become more geometric and abstract as time went on.
