- 作品解説: 波が渦を巻き飛沫を上げて荒れ狂う、その上方でたくましく群れをなして飛んでいる。空中に跳ねる小魚や虫を捕獲しているのであろうか。カモメの力強い生命力にあやかり、激動の世の中を生きることを願った図柄であるのかもしれない。それぞれのカモメの方向や位置、白い波涛の画面の中のバランスなどがよく練られている。 渦を巻き、しぶきを上げる海上をカモメたちが飛んでいる。カモメといえば頭部が真っ白なイメージを抱いていたが、コアジサシなどのカモメは夏羽の時期はこの絵のように頭部が黒いようだ。アジなどの小魚を急降下で刺すように捉えることからアジサシとの名前がついているとのこと。 花鳥画を得意としていた秀畝は、カモメが飛しょうする姿をさまざまな角度で捉えている。しかし、全くの写実的な表現ではなく、かたちや色を意匠化して優雅な雰囲気を作りだしている。波しぶきを表現するために、胡粉と呼ばれる白い絵の具を刷毛にたっぷりと含ませ、飛散させているところなど、二十世紀のアクション・ペインティングさながらである。 本作は、カモメの力強い生命力にあやかり、激動の世の中をたくましく生きることを願った図柄であるのかもしれない。カモメの方向や位置、白い波涛のバランスなどがよく練られている。Description: Waves are swirling and splashing in a raging sea, above which flocks of birds are flying in robust formation. Perhaps they are capturing small fish or insects that leap into the air. The design may be inspired by the seagull's powerful life force and a wish to live in a turbulent world. The direction and position of each seagull and the balance of the white waves in the painting are well thought out. The seagulls are flying over the swirling, spraying sea. I had an image of seagulls as having pure white heads, but it seems that the heads of gulls such as the least tern have black heads during their summer plumage, as shown in this painting. They are named terns because they catch small fish such as horse mackerels as if they were stabbing them in a dive. Shuho, who excelled at flower-and-bird paintings, captured seagulls in flight from various angles. However, he did not use a totally realistic expression, but created an elegant atmosphere by designing shapes and colors. In order to express the spray from the waves, the artist uses a brush with a generous amount of white paint, called gofun, and lets it splash about, much like an action painting of the 20th century. This work may be a design inspired by the seagull's powerful life force and a wish for a robust life in a turbulent world. The direction and position of the seagulls, as well as the balance of the white waves, are well thought out.
