This is one of Kuniyoshi's three early paintings of beautiful women, "Snow, Moon and Flowers. Moonlight shines through the latticework of a latticework of latticework and a geiko sits on her knees, backlit and sexy, creating a projection. In the upper left corner, a Dutch glass frame depicts a view of the Sumida River with Mount Tsukuba in the distance, suggesting that the geiko in this painting is on the second floor of a boathouse. The lantern in the upper right corner of the painting reads "Afumiya Monhiko," perhaps alluding to the name of the inn, "Omiya Monhiko. The name of this geiko, Mitsu, can be recognized from the characters on the tenugui (hand towel). Japanese paintings do not depict shadows in broad daylight, but moonlight, as in this painting, is an amorous element, and was often used in Western-style paintings.

Paintings of Edo period
