- 現在の東京・駿河台方面から西に水道橋駅付近を望む図です。画面中央を流れるのは神田川で、その左岸、遠方に大きな広場が見えるあたりに水戸藩の屋敷（現在の東京ドームの周辺）があります。本図では神田川に架かる箱状の橋は、かつて神田上水が通っていた「懸樋」です。この一帯が水道橋という地名で呼ばれるようになった所以です。右岸側の険しい崖は、今日でも同様の地形が残っていますが、そこに鬱蒼と生い茂る木立ちが量感豊かに描かれています。人物ばかりでなく樹木の群像表現にも亜欧堂田善は非凡な力を示しています。<br/><BR/>亜欧堂田善（またはその門人）が手がけた多くの銅版画の中で、もっとも人気を博したシリーズが、これらの小形江戸名所図です。北斎などの浮世絵風景版画の構図や上方の小型銅版画の流行に影響を与えた点でも重要な作品群です。田善の基準作『青蔭集』挿図にも通じる写実性と抽象化が同居する、緩急のメリハリの利いた表現が見られる点も大きな特徴です。現在25種類の図柄が確認されていて、そのうち神戸市立博物館は19種を所蔵しています。<br/><br/>【江戸の絵画】The view is from the Surugadai area of present-day Tokyo, looking west toward the Suidobashi Station area. The Kanda River runs through the center of the image, and the Mito clan's mansion (around the area of today's Tokyo Dome) is located on the left bank of the river, where a large plaza can be seen in the distance. The box-shaped bridge over the Kanda River in this image is a "suspension canal" over which the Kanda Waterworks used to run. This is the reason why this area came to be called Suidobashi. The steep cliff on the right side of the river still retains the same topography today, and the dense groves of trees are depicted there with a rich sense of volume. In addition to the figures, the group portrayal of the trees also shows the extraordinary power of Aoudo Tazen. <BR/><BR/>Of the many copperplate engravings by Denzen Aoudo (or his students), the most popular series were these small Edo Meisho zu. These works are also important in that they influenced the composition of ukiyoe landscape prints by Hokusai and others, as well as the popularity of small copperplate engravings in the Kamigata region. Another important characteristic of these works is that they show a characteristic combination of realism and abstraction that can be seen in the illustrations of Denzen's standard work, "Seikage-shu.
