- 洋装に身を包んだ黒髪の男女が、洋風の調度品で飾られた部屋の中でダンスを踊っている様子を描いた錦絵。作者の楊洲周延は、上流階級女性の風俗を描いた美人画を得意とし、多くの作品を残しています。<br/><BR/>明治10年代後半(1883-87)頃、日本では、西洋諸国に対して日本の近代化を認めさせるため、日本の制度や文化をヨーロッパ風に改めようとする政策が進められました。その代表が、東京にあった官設社交場の鹿鳴館です。本作品は、鹿鳴館で行われたような、明治時代の日本人の舞踏会のイメージを伝えています。<BR/><br/><br/>【近代の神戸】This nishikie depicts a black-haired man and woman dressed in Western-style clothing dancing in a room decorated with Western-style furnishings. The artist, Yangzu Shunyan, excelled at portraying the manners and customs of upper-class women, and left behind many works of beautiful women. <BR/><BR/>Throughout the late Meiji period (1883-87), Japan was pursuing a policy of modifying its institutions and culture to European styles in order to win Western nations' recognition of Japan's modernization. The Rokumeikan, a government-run social hall in Tokyo, is a representative example of this policy.
