From the late 18th to the early 19th century, the pastime of viewing paintings through optical instruments such as peep show goggles became popular around the world. In the 18th century, the telescope became widely used for astronomical observation, and was even used as a tool for painting, as in the case of Maruyama Okyo.

On the other hand, some painters ironically depicted people who were fascinated by this new item.

This painting is a rather rare example of a large neck painting of a beautiful woman by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). It was painted during the period when he called himself "Kashou," and features a large depiction of a warrior's wife in black teeth holding a parasol and a young girl in a shimada topknot. The two are probably a mother and daughter. The daughter is peering through vermilion-lacquered reading glasses that appear to be Japanese-made. The title "Nanakuse" suggests that this set of seven paintings is based on the theme of "habits" that women unconsciously display, but only one other painting, commonly known as "Hozuki," is known to exist. The "Hozuki" depicts a hand mirror and may have been part of a series featuring novel glassware. This painting could be interpreted as a mother chiding her daughter for her "habit" of frowning and being preoccupied with her reading glasses. This is because Hokusai, who was also an avid willow poet, composed the following haiku: "The skin is the most important aspect of the far-sightedness of the viewer. The girl's face contorts as if she is being punished with moxa for the first time as she looks through the telescope.
