A huge vase holds a wide variety of flowers, with fruit and birds pecking at the bottom. Some of the flowers are covered with ants, suggesting that this gorgeous bouquet is doomed to decay. This is a typical Western representation of a floral fowl and fauna painting with "vanitas" as its subject.
The 8th Shogun, Yoshimune, asked the chief of the Dutch trading post to import koumoe, and an order was placed in 1722, and five Western paintings were imported to Nagasaki in 1726. Two of the paintings, "Peacocks, Parakeets, Camel Birds, and Blue Herons" and "All Kinds of Dutch Flowers," were given to the Five Hundred Arhats Temple in Honjo, Edo, and hung in the main hall. In 1796 (Kansei 8), brothers Ishikawa Dainami and Mengkao copied the latter, and Tani Buncho copied the latter as the present work. Buncho was a close friend of Dainami and looked up to Dainami as a master of Western painting. Both of these works are groundbreaking reproductions of Western paintings in terms of shading and three-dimensional expression, using traditional Japanese techniques and materials. At the time, Buncho was surveying and copying old books and paintings in the collections of shrines and temples at the order of Matsudaira Sadanobu, and the existence of this painting is probably an extension of such research.

In addition, the lower part of the vase is signed "W. Van Royen 1725," suggesting that the original artist may have been the Amsterdam painter Hendrik Willem Van Royen.

[Edo Paintings
