- 作品解説: 禅の画題に「十牛図」があり、この印象が描く牧童もそこから派生している。悟りの段階を示す「十牛図」中の「騎牛帰家」 は、心の平安を得ることができれば、牛飼いと牛は一体となって、牛を御する必要もなくなるという意味であるが、本作はまさにその状態であるとともに、牧歌的な詩情をも感じさせる、春草ら近代日本画家たちの試みと共通している。 大きな柳の木の下には、牛の背に乗る少年の姿がある。牛を誘導する手綱（たずな）や鞭（むち）を持ってはいるものの、全く使う気はなさそうだ。しかも顔の表情は虚ろで、身体にも力が入っていない。 禅の画題に「十牛図」があり、この堂本印象が描く牧童もそこから派生している。悟りの段階を示す「十牛図」中の「騎牛帰家（きぎゅうきか）」 は、心の平安を得ることができれば、牛飼いと牛は一体となって、牛を御する必要もなくなるという意味であるが、本作はまさにその状態にある。この画題に牧歌的な詩情を織り交ぜたところに、明治大正期の新たな日本画の流れを感じさせる。 若い頃の堂本印象は、本作のような洗練された精緻な絵を描き、官設の美術展で特選となるなど画壇の花形となった。しかし、戦後しばらくするとそういった過去の表現を捨て、前衛的な抽象絵画へと転じている。その勇気は国内外の多くの人々に刺激を与えた。Description: The Zen painting entitled "Ten Oxen," from which this impression of a herdsman is derived, depicts the stages of enlightenment. In the "Ten Oxen," "Kigyu Kikei" means that when a person has attained a state of inner peace, the cowherd and the ox become one and there is no longer any need to control the ox. Under a large willow tree, there is a boy riding on the back of an ox. Although he is holding reins and a whip to guide the ox, he seems to have no intention of using them. Moreover, the boy's face is blank and his body lacks strength. The Zen painting entitled "Ten Oxen" was derived from this painting by Impression Domoto. Kigyu-ka" in the "Ten Oxen," which indicates the stage of enlightenment, means that once the viewer has attained peace of mind, the cowherd and the ox become one, and there is no need to control the ox. The pastoral poetic sentiment woven into the subject matter of this painting is indicative of a new trend in Japanese painting during the Meiji and Taisho eras. In his younger days, Impression Domoto painted refined and exquisite pictures such as this one, which won special prizes at government art exhibitions and became a star of the art world. However, some time after the war, he abandoned such past expressions and turned to avant-garde abstract paintings. His courage inspired many people in Japan and abroad.
