- 作品解説: 関口俊吾は半世紀以上に渡りフランスで活動した。戦前はフランス給費留学生としてパリに滞在したが、ドイツ軍がパリに侵攻しやむなく帰国。戦後は画家としては荻須高徳、藤田嗣治に次いで三番目に早くパリの地を再度踏んだ。この作品が描かれたフランス北西部ノルマンディ地方のイポールは、関口の師である鹿子木孟郎が滞在制作した地である。この近くにはモネが描いたエトルタやデュフィが生まれたル・アーブルがあり、このノルマンディは連合軍が上陸作戦を行った場所としても知られている。風景の美しさだけでなく、鹿子木への想いや戦時中の体験など、様々なイメージが交錯しながら制作されたのであろう。Description: Shungo Sekiguchi lived and worked in France for more than half a century. Before the war, he stayed in Paris as a French-scholarship student, but was forced to return to Japan after the German invasion of Paris. After the war, he became the third painter after Takanori Ogisu and Tsuguharu Fujita to return to Paris. Ipole in Normandy, northwestern France, where this work was painted, is where Sekiguchi's mentor, Menro Kashiki, stayed and worked. Nearby are Etruta, where Monet painted, and Le Havre, where Dufy was born, and Normandy is also known as the site of the Allied landing operations. It is likely that the artist created this work with a mixture of various images, including not only the beauty of the landscape, but also his feelings toward Kashikogi and his wartime experiences.
