- 作品解説: ヨシ（別名アシ）の茂る水辺にガンが数羽身体を休めている。華やかな花鳥画を多く手がけた池上秀畝であるが、本作は色彩が抑えられ、墨の濃淡に幽玄さをも感じさせる。おそらく、本作を描くにあたって作者の念頭にあったのは、室町時代の絵画であろう。中国南宋時代の禅僧画家・牧谿（もっけい）による作品が日本にもたらされると、画家たちに多大な影響を与え、禅の精神とともに水墨画の世界がこの時代に大きく発展した。牧谿の描いた《平沙落雁図（へいさらくがんず）》（出光美術館所蔵）は、本作構想の下地になっている作品であると思われるが、雄大な自然のなかにわび・さびの世界が広がっている。 しかしながら、本作には愛嬌（あいきょう）がある。室町絵画の名品の数々を念頭に置きながらも、鳥たちに対する愛情を優先させているし、水紋や霧の表現など現代的な感覚を取り入れる努力も怠っていない。Description: Several geese are resting by the water's edge among thick reeds (also known as reeds). Although Ikegami Hidempo produced many gorgeous flower-and-bird paintings, the colors in this work are subdued, and the shades of black ink give it an ethereal quality. The artist probably had Muromachi period paintings in mind when he created this work. The works of Mokkei, a Zen priest of the Southern Song period in China, were brought to Japan and had a great influence on Japanese painters. The work "Heisa Rakuganzu" (collection of Idemitsu Museum of Arts), painted by Mokokei, is thought to be the basis for the conception of this work. However, this work has charm. While keeping in mind the masterpieces of Muromachi paintings, the artist gives priority to his love for birds, and he does not neglect efforts to incorporate modern sensibilities, such as water patterns and misty expressions.
