- 大きく描かれた道を挟んで左側(南)が居留地、右側(北)が雑居地という境界を描いています。作者のC. B. バーナードは、本作品に加え、明治11年(1878)に同じ構図で水彩画を描いています。<br/><BR/>当館は、居留地とその周辺の風景を描いたバーナードの水彩画を、合わせて5点収蔵しています。直筆(じきひつ)で「1878」と記したものが4点、「1877」が1点です。これらの年は、バーナードが神戸居留地26番のブラウン商会につとめていた時期とほぼ重なることなどから、史料的な価値も高いといえます。バーナードは戦時中も日本に留まり、昭和22年(1947)4月に93才で死去。千代夫人とともに横浜外国人墓地に眠ります。 <br/><br/>【近代の神戸】It depicts the boundary between the settlement on the left (south) across a large painted road and the residential area on the right (north). The artist, C. B. Barnard, painted a watercolor of the same composition in 1878 in addition to this work. <BR/><BR/>The museum has in its collection a total of five of Bernard's watercolors depicting scenes of the settlement and its surroundings. Four are inscribed "1878" and one "1877" in his own hand. These years coincide with the period when Bernard was employed at the Brown Trading Company, No. 26, Kobe Settlement, and are therefore of high historical value. Bernard remained in Japan during the war and died in April 1947 at the age of 93. He and his wife Chiyo rest in the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery. <br/><br/>[Modern Kobe
