- C. B. バーナード(Charles Burton Bernard 1853－1947)はイギリスのサマーセット州ラングポートで生まれ、ロンドンで育ちました。明治8年に商社の茶部門担当者として横浜に来航。同16年に独立し、日本茶の輸出を手がけて成功をおさめています。外国人たちの社交クラブや劇場の運営に貢献し、風刺漫画雑誌『ジャパン・パンチ』で知られる画家のチャールズ・ワーグマンとも親交を結びました。<br/><BR/>当館は、居留地とその周辺の風景を描いたバーナードの水彩画を、合わせて5点収蔵しています。直筆(じきひつ)で「1878」と記したものが4点、「1877」が1点である。これらの年は、バーナードが神戸居留地26番のブラウン商会につとめていた時期とほぼ重なることなどから、史料的な価値も高いといえます。バーナードは戦時中も日本に留まり、昭和22年(1947)4月に93才で死去。千代夫人とともに横浜外国人墓地に眠ります。<br/><br/>【近代の神戸】C. B. Bernard (Charles Burton Bernard 1853-1947) was born in Langport, Somerset, England and grew up in London. He came to Yokohama in 1875 as a tea department manager for a trading company. He became an independent tea exporter in 1881, and was successful in the export of Japanese tea. He contributed to the operation of social clubs and theaters for foreigners and became friends with Charles Wagman, a painter known for his satirical cartoon magazine "Japan Punch. <BR/><BR/>The museum has five of Bernard's watercolors depicting the settlement and its surrounding landscape. Four are inscribed "1878" in his own handwriting (jikihitsu), and one is dated "1877. These years are of great historical value, as they coincide with the period when Bernard was employed by the Brown Trading Company at No. 26, Kobe Settlement. Bernard remained in Japan during the war and died in April 1947 at the age of 93. He and his wife Chiyo rest in the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery. <br/><br/>[Modern Kobe
