- 居留地に隣接するヒョーゴ・ホテルの2階から、居留地海岸通を東方へ眺めた風景です。左端の大きな建物はイギリス系の香港上海(ほんこんしゃんはい)銀行神戸支店。その向こうに外国の商館や領事館の建物が続きます。中央の緑地帯は外国人が散歩を楽しんだプロムナード。「東洋で最も美しく、よく設計された居留地」と賞賛された神戸居留地のようすが、情緒豊かに描き出されています。<br/><BR/>C. B. バーナード(Charles Burton Bernard, 1853-1947)はイギリスのサマーセット州ラングポートで生まれ、ロンドンで育ちました。明治8年に商社の茶部門担当者として横浜に来航。同16年に独立し、日本茶の輸出を手がけて成功をおさめました。外国人たちの社交クラブや劇場の運営に貢献し、風刺漫画雑誌『ジャパン・パンチ』で知られる画家のチャールズ・ワーグマンとも親交を結んでいます。<br/><br/>【近代の神戸】This is a view looking eastward from the second floor of the Hyogo Hotel adjacent to the Kobe Settlement on Kaigan Dori. The large building on the far left is the Kobe branch of the British-owned Hong Kong Shanghai Bank. Beyond it are a series of foreign trading houses and consulate buildings. The green belt in the center is a promenade where foreigners enjoyed strolling. The Kobe Settlement, praised as "the most beautiful and well-designed settlement in the Orient," is richly depicted here. <BR/><BR/>C. B. Bernard (Charles Burton Bernard, 1853-1947) was born in Langport, Somerset, England and grew up in London. He came to Yokohama in 1875 as a representative of the tea department of a trading company. He became an independent tea exporter in 1881, and was successful in the export of Japanese tea. He contributed to the operation of social clubs and theaters for foreigners and was friends with Charles Wagman, a painter known for his satirical cartoon magazine "Japan Punch. <br/><br/>[Modern Kobe
