On both sides of the impulse are 19th-century bird's-eye views of Nagasaki and portraits of Cock Bronnhoff, head of the Dutch trading post, and his family. This impulse stand was presented to Siebold by its creator, Kawahara Keiga (1786-?). However, it was confiscated by the Nagasaki Magistrate's Office during the Siebold Affair in 1828. Later, it was handed down to the Kitagawa family, the Nagasaki magistrate's physician. It was purchased by Ikecho Meng in 1931 (Showa 6).
This is a bird's-eye view of Nagasaki and its port in the 19th century, with the vantage point set above the current vicinity of JR Nagasaki Station. The central part of Nagasaki at that time is depicted on the left center of the screen, including the Chinese residences, Dejima and Nagasaki Magistrate's Office, and the surrounding urban area is also clearly depicted.

The Bronnhof family on one side of this impulse shows the Keiga sub-seal (European seal "Toyoskij" and hat-shaped seal "Keiga"). Kock Bronkhoff came to Japan in 1809 as a warehouseman. In the 10th year of Bunka (Bunka 10), he went to Batavia to negotiate the British plan to recapture Dejima Island, and was captured and sent to England. After the peace between Britain and the Netherlands, he was appointed to succeed Douf as director of the trading post, and came to Japan again in Bunka 14, accompanied by his wife and children. The Nagasaki magistrate did not allow him to stay in Japan with his family, so he entrusted his wife and children to Hendrik Doof, the former head of the trading post, and they were repatriated to the Netherlands. This story attracted the interest of the people of Nagasaki and was depicted in many paintings and prints, including this one.

[Early Modern Paintings Related to Nagasaki
2022-01-21.","Data extracted from Bunka Isan Dētabēsu (Cultural Heritage Database) by Agency for Cultural Affairs (Bunkachō).
