- 作品解説: 北蓮蔵は1927 （昭和2） 年7月から約2年間渡欧している。裏書によると、本作はその最初の年の冬であり、フランス以外にもベルギーのブルージュへ写生に赴いたことがわかる。ブルージュは13世紀から14世紀の街並みが残る美しい街として有名で、北蓮蔵はどのような動機で同地を訪れようとしたのか気になるところである。建物や木々にはペインティングナイフが多用されており、このときすでに画風の変革に取り組んでいた。Description: Kita Renzo went to Europe for about two years from July 1927. According to the endorsement, this work was painted in the winter of his first year in Europe, and it shows that he went to Bruges, Belgium, to sketch in addition to France. Bruges is famous for its beautiful 13th- and 14th-century cityscape, and one wonders what motive Kitarenzo had for visiting the area. Painting knives are used extensively on buildings and trees, and he was already working on a change in his painting style at this time.
