Suyama Ichirō. Kindai nihon bijutsutenshi [Modern Exhibition History in Japan]. Tokyo: Kokusho Kankōkai, 2023.
A monograph on the history of exhibitions in modern and contemporary Japan. The main section of eight chapters spans the Bakumatsu-Meiji periods to the “Mona Lisa Exhibition” in 1974, describes the development of the unique Japanese exhibition community, involving department stores and newspaper companies. At the end of the publication, “Shiryō hen [Resources]” provides indexes of individual exhibitions, venues, personal names as well as the chronological tables of art exhibitions and art museums in Japan.

A monograph on a history of Inten exhibitions held by Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) which was established in 1898. Also included is information on other exhibitions closely related to Nihon Bijutsuin. Period covered is from the year of Vienna World Exposition, 1873 to 1998.

A database of exhibition postcards highlighting exhibits, in the collection of The International Research Center for Japanese Studies. As of June 15, 2023, includes postcards from the 1st to 12th Bunten (Monbushō Bijutsu Tenrankai = Ministry of Education Fine Arts Exhibition). Contents include postcard images, genre of artwork on the postcard, artist information (name and birth/death dates), exhibition information (name, series number, and year). In addition to keyword, possible to search by exhibition name, artist name (with phonetic reading). The center plans to continue adding more postcard images to the database.
