Bunka-cho Art Platform will host an online workshop on publishing art translations. The speakers (Kamiya Yukie, Andrew Maerkle) and moderator (Odate Natsuko) will discuss Japanese-English bilingual publications and how they are effective tools for dissemination of research on contemporary Japanese art, as well as the various production processes involved.
This program will be conducted in Japanese only.

Kamiya served Gallery Director, Japan Society, New York, Chief Curator of Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art and Associate Curator of New Museum, New York. She has organized exhibitions internationally bridging Asia and other regions on cross-temporal themes, and has published various catalogues. Kamiya also was a co-curator of the 12th Shanghai Biennial (2018-19), group exhibitions including “Discordant Harmony: Critical Reflection on the Imagination of Asia,” in 2015-2018, "Re:Quest Japanese Contemporary Art since the 1970s" in 2013 and others. She was honored the Academic Prize from the Western Art Foundation in Japan for her curatorial achievement in 2011. As a member of AICA (International Association of Art Critics), she contributed publications extensively including Hiroshi Sugimoto: Gates of Paradise, Skira/Rizzoli (2017), Ravaged: Art and Culture in Times of Conflict, Mercatorfonds (2014), and Creamier :Contemporary Art in Culture, Phaidon, (2010).
Andrew Maerkle

Andrew Maerkle is a writer, editor, and translator based in Tokyo. He is Deputy Editor of the bilingual Japanese online art platform ART iT and a contributor to international art journals including Art & Australia, Artforum, and frieze. From 2006 to 2008 he was Deputy Editor of ArtAsiaPacific magazine in New York and part of the team that created the annual AAP Almanac. His translations from Chinese and Japanese into English have appeared in numerous publications and catalogues. Book-length translations include Hu Fang’s Towards a Non-Intentional Space, vol. I (Koenig Books, 2016) from the Chinese and Koki Tanaka’s How to Live Together: Production Notes (Skulptur Projekte Münster, 2017) from the Japanese. His book of translations of the writings of Mono-ha artist Kishio Suga, Kishio Suga: Writings, vol. 1, 1969‒1979, was published by Skira, Milan, in 2021. In 2019 Maerkle was a founding committee member of the Bunka-cho Art Platform Japan project and from 2020 to 2021 was founding Editorial Director of the Bunka-cho Art Platform Japan’s translation project. He teaches in the Graduate School of Global Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts.

Since 2000, Odate Natsuko has managed many leading Japanese artists, including Araki Nobuyoshi, Morimura Yasumasa, Kasahara Emiko, and Yanagi Miwa. She has also served as an editor of online magazine ARTiT since 2010. She was a Curatorial Associate of the Yokohama Triennale 2014. Her other art exhibition and events include Miwa Yanagi: Windswept Woman: The Old Girls’ Troupe (Venice Biennale, Japan Pavilion, 2008), Yasumasa Morimura: Theater of Self (Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, 2013), Nobuyoshi Araki: Ojo Shashu (Toyota Municipal Museum of Art, Niigata City Art Museum, Shiseido Gallery, et al, 2014), Yasumasa Morimura: Ego Obscura (Japan Society, New York, 2018). Through her recent involvement with the operation of artist-run initiatives such as ReFreedom_Aichi, Artforall, and Hyōgen no genba chōsadan, Odate has been exploring new forms of collaboration.
