Description: Since ancient times, the mandarin duck has appeared in artworks as a auspicious bird associated with weddings and other auspicious occasions. In the Edo period, Jakuchu and Song Ziseki also painted mandarin ducks, and the combination of plum blossoms and mandarin ducks has been widely seen especially since the Meiji period (1868-1912). In this work by Shuho, bamboo grass is added to make the combination even more auspicious. The combination of Yamato-e and Suiboku-ga techniques is used to give the painting a more varied feel.
