Description: A male peacock grooms himself on an oddly shaped stone while two butterflies dance around him. The combination of a butterfly and a peacock was also depicted by Maruyama Okyo and Nagasawa Rousetsu in the Edo period. Butterflies were also a symbol of good fortune, representing longevity, and peacocks were in demand as interior decorations to emphasize the solemnity of the scene. Shuho, who excelled in flower-and-bird paintings, often painted peacocks, and his peacock paintings must have been especially well received. Charcoal underdrawing lines can be seen in several places.
