Through a voluminous amount of resources and years of research, Anarchy of the Body reveals how the practice of performance conducted by art groups and individual artists in various parts of Japan formed a legacy of resistance towards institutionalization inherent in not only the art world but in everyday lives. The book supplements the missing pieces of the common narrative of the post-war Japanese avant-garde art history by following the trajectory of the artists and contextualizing them socially, culturally, and politically in Japan during this period. This 768-page book contains 256 plates (many of which are rare archival photographs) and 130 pages of chronology. The author received the 2010 Ministry of Education Award for Fine Arts (criticism category) for this book.

Histories of Modern and Contemporary Japan Through Art is a compilation of essays which surveys the development of art in Japan from the Bakumatsu era (1853–1867) to the 2010s, with a focus on institutional theory. The original Japanese edition, which was 15 years in the making, is composed of 956 pages. Each chapter is dedicated to a specific era and is written by a specialist on the subject matter. This book has become essential reading for those with an interest in modern and contemporary Japanese art and is a foundational material for students and researchers.
For the English edition overseen by Art Platform Japan, three chapters on the post-1945 era (pp. 527–836 of the Japanese edition) were selected for translation and assigned to translators specializing in the subject of the respective chapters. This edition will be valuable reading material that offers a deeper insight into contemporary Japanese art.
