Workshops: Education and Public Programs in Japanese Art Museums

The classroom is not the only place for art pedagogy.

Education and outreach have long been key priorities for Japanese art museums. A charter of the Japanese Council of Art Museums (JCAM), an organization numbering nearly 400 national, public, and private institutional members, states that “art museums [must] create new value in wide collaboration with the populace through public exhibitions and the promotion of education.”

In this paper, Furihata Chikako begins by discussing the evolution of educational outreach initiatives at Japanese art museums from the 1970s to the 1990s, with a particular focus on the workshop format. In the second half of the paper, Furihata details workshops held at the Meguro Museum of Art during her tenure as a curator, as case studies suggesting the potential for art museums to offer modes of educational outreach distinct from conventional schools. Furihata concludes by asserting that art museums have a vital role to play in nurturing lifelong creativity, communication skills, and consideration for others, even beyond art itself.

This paper was originally published in the August 2008 issue of Fuji Xerox Art Bulletin (ed. Tokyo Publishing House).
