- うさぎを題材にしつつも、まだ拙さを残している筆使いから、「明治三十九年」の年記及び「N.F.」のイニシャルが記されている《小鳥》と同時期で、朝香宮に降嫁する前の内親王（富美宮）時代に描かれたものと推測される。允子内親王ほか明治天皇の四皇女は、内親王御用掛を務めた日本画家、跡見玉枝より絵画指導を受けていたことが知られているが、本作品もそうした背景の元で制作されたものではないかと推測される。The brushwork, which is based on a rabbit but still retains a certain poise, suggests that this work was painted during the reign of the imperial princess (Tominomiya) before her marriage to Prince Asakomiya, at the same time as "Little Bird," which bears the year "1896" and the initials "N.F.". It is known that the four princesses of the Meiji Emperor, including Princess Masako, received painting instruction from Atomi Tamae, a Japanese-style painter who served as the Imperial Princess's personal assistant.
