In 1888 (Meiji 21), a portrait of Emperor Meiji was painted by Edoardo Chiossone (1833-98), an Italian who was in Japan as a hired foreigner at the time. (Edoardo Chiossone, 1833-98), an Italian who was in Japan as a hired foreigner at the time, created a portrait of the Emperor Meiji. This portrait, taken by the photographer Riyo Maruki, was widely circulated as a goshinkei (portrait of the emperor), which helped to popularize the image of the Meiji Emperor. This work is thought to have been produced based on this portrait. The signature reads "G.Molinari Roma 1897," suggesting that it was made in Rome in a later period, but much is unknown, including the circumstances of its creation.
