- 本作は40のテーマにより2ページで一つの国や地域を紹介し、80ページで世界を旅する絵本である。フランス人ジャーナリストで自身も世界を旅したガストン・シェロによる序文から始まり、日本、サンゴの島アトル、バオバブの木が繁るアフリカ、ニューヨークの摩天楼、コンドルが飛行する南米など、エレ自身による絵とエスプリのきいた文章とともに世界の国々を紹介していく。ニューヨークの摩天楼を描いたイラストはアール・デコのイラストの精髄といえる。西洋がアフリカやアジアの文化を夢見た20世紀初頭の影響が色濃く感じられる作品である。This picture book is a journey around the world in 80 pages, introducing a country or region in two pages according to 40 themes. The book begins with a foreword by Gaston Chérot, a French journalist who has traveled the world himself, and then introduces the countries of the world, including Japan, the coral island of Atoll, Africa with its baobab trees, the skyscrapers of New York City, and South America with its flying condors, all illustrated by Ele himself and written with an esprit de corps. The illustration of a New York skyscraper is the essence of Art Deco illustration. The influence of the early 20th century, when the West dreamed of African and Asian cultures, is strongly felt in this work.
