- 天井から何か茶色のものがぶら下がっている。ほどなくそれが、家の中の見慣れた小さな器具、電気のプラグだということが判るだろう。オルデンバーグは1960年代初頭のニューヨークで活動を開始した。この作品の根底にあるのは、観客を巻き込むことによって成立する「ハプニング」で彼が用いた様々な小道具である。彼は身のまわりにあるプラグという物を異様なまでに拡大することで、その機能や意味を宙吊りにした。ここでは何よりも物としての圧倒的な存在感、形そのものの奇妙さが際立っている。その一方で、素材として用いられた柔らかな革は、何の支えももたずに、半ば空気の抜けたような漠とした空虚を漂わせながら、周囲のあらゆる力に影響される不安定さを強調している。身近な物が異化されて提示されることで、その意味や空間に歪みが生じ、見る者の日常的な感覚は攪乱され、別の視点が現れるだろう。物の形への強い関心と、それを逆説的に表明する素材の選択が巧みに結合したこの作品を含むシリーズは「柔らかい彫刻」と呼ばれ、それまでの彫刻の考え方に大きな転換を迫るものとなった。（Y.C.）rnrnSomething brown is hanging from the ceiling. Soon you will realize that it is a familiar little fixture in the house, an electrical plug. Oldenburg began his career in New York in the early 1960s. The basis of this work is the various props he uses in his "happenings," which are established by involving the audience. By expanding the plugs that surround us to an unusual degree, he has suspended their functions and meanings. The overwhelming presence of the plug as an object and the strangeness of the form itself stand out above all else. On the other hand, the soft leather used as a material for the plugs has no support, but rather, it emphasizes the instability of the plugs, which are affected by all the forces around them, while drifting in a vague, airless void. By presenting familiar objects in a dissimilar manner, their meaning and space are distorted, the viewer's everyday senses are disturbed, and a different perspective emerges. The series including this work, which skillfully combines a strong interest in the form of objects with the choice of materials that paradoxically express this interest, has been called "soft sculpture" and has forced a major shift in the way sculpture had been thought of up to that point.
