1871年(明治4)に撮影された旧江戸城の写真のネガ原板。江戸城は幕末から荒廃が始まり、明治維新後は江戸時代の面影を失っていった。当時の太政官少史蜷川式胤(にながわのりたね)はその姿を目にし、写真で記録しようと太政官の許可を得て写真師横山松三郎に撮影を命じた。当時の写真はガラス板に感光剤を塗り、乾かないうちに撮影、現像するコロディオン湿板法。ネガには多くの修正が加えられ、空の部分には紙が貼られたり、黒く塗られたりしているものが多い。これはネガの画像を印画紙に焼き付ける際、空の部分に紙を貼り付け、建物と空との境界線を黒く塗りつぶしておくことで、空を白く、建物の形を明確に表現するためであった。Original negative of a photograph of the former Edo Castle taken in 1871.
