- 慶応3年（1867）4月に幕府がイギリスとの間で結んだ大坂約定において、建設が決まった5つの灯台のうちの一つが和田岬灯台です。明治維新後、約定は明治政府に引き継がれ、明治4年（1871）に完成、同5年1月に初点灯されています。写真の灯台は初代の木製灯台で、イギリス人技師リチャード・ヘンリー・ブラントンによって設計されたもの。画面で灯台の後ろに見える石造砲塔と土塁は和田岬台場（砲台）。ただ木製灯台は火災の危険性があったことから、明治17年に鉄製灯台に改築されています。この鉄製砲台は昭和38 年（1963）まで使用され、廃灯後、現在の須磨海浜公園内に移築され、平成10年（1998）に国の登録有形文化財に登録されています。<br/><br/>【開国・開港】The Wadamisaki Lighthouse was one of the five lighthouses that the shogunate decided to build under the Osaka Agreement with Great Britain in April 1867. After the Meiji Restoration, the agreement was taken over by the Meiji government, and the lighthouse was completed in 1871 and first lit in January 1872. The lighthouse in the photo is the first wooden lighthouse, designed by the English engineer Richard Henry Brunton. The stone turret and earthwork seen behind the lighthouse on the screen are the Wadamisaki Daiba (gun emplacement). However, the wooden lighthouse was a fire hazard, so it was converted to an iron lighthouse in 1884. This iron turret remained in use until 1963, when it was moved to its current location in Suma Seaside Park and registered as a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 1998.
