The location of the row of pine trees and stone lanterns along the approach to Wada Shrine on the right and the Wadamisaki Lighthouse built in 1871 (Meiji 4) in the center of the image indicate that this photo was taken looking south from the north at the Wadamisaki Gun Battery. Based on comparison with other examples in the museum's collection, this photo was probably taken in 1872. Looking at the mound, we can also see a break that serves as an entrance to the interior, located to the right of the stone bastion tower. The cylindrical stone turret, called a stone redoubt, had 11 gun emplacements at equal intervals, enabling bombardment in all directions at 360 degrees. This suggests that the four platforms, including the Wadamisaki Battery, were prepared not only for attacks from the sea, but also for attacks on land.

[Opening of Japan and Ports
