In contrast to "Nijushiko Dojikan," which is more consciously a landscape painting, Kuniyoshi's later work, "Tang-do Hatsu-shiko" focuses mainly on people, and although clear blue skies, white clouds, and palm-like trees are seen as symbols of foreign countries, there are no distinctive exotic scenes, as in the use of specific imported Western books.

The preface to this volume, which contains 24 stories, reads, "Han-do no zu wa oran nikusai zu tanqing. In the joint volume "Nanatsugumi iriko makura" (Kaei 6), Kuniyoshi painted a signboard with the same composition as "Zhang Xiao and Zhang Ye" in jade-plate oil painting, which suggests that the main focus of this series was to depict "Han-do" using Western-style expression with oil painting or jade-plate oil painting in mind.

[Edo Paintings
