- 上部に書かれたオランダ語の文章は「ナポレオンが権威の欲望に迷い、数多くの殺伐とした戦いにおいて、自分の兵士のものと千人かの敵の住民を死者にしたため、暴君の名で呼ばなければならない。しかし死後にいわゆる神聖同盟が結ばれ、また兵学はその時以来に改善したため、ヨーロッパの解放者とも見なされても良い。」という意味です。これを記したH.K.Zunzirgとは細川潤次郎(1834ｰ1932)であると言われています。19世紀のはじめにヨーロッパを席巻したナポレオンについて、日本ではすこし時代が経ってから注目されるようになり、安政年間(1854-60)にはその伝記などが刊行されました。本図は、このようなナポレオンへの関心の高まりを背景にして描かれた作品でしょう。<br/><br/>【江戸の絵画】【江戸時代の洋学】The Dutch text at the top reads, "Napoleon must be called by the name of tyrant because he was lost in the lust of authority and in numerous deadly battles he left dead his own soldiers' and some thousand of his enemies' inhabitants. But since the so-called Holy League was formed after his death, and since his military science has improved since that time, he may also be regarded as the liberator of Europe." This is what it means. The biography of Napoleon, who swept through Europe at the beginning of the 19th century, was published in Japan in the Ansei period (1854-60).
