- その作者の名前も知らず、落款も見ないままにこの絵を目にしたなら、多くの人が近代以降の作品と見紛うでしょう。筆者・司馬江漢（1747〜1818）は江戸時代に「西洋画士」の称号をほしいままにした画家ですが、銅版画からも油彩画からも遠ざかっていた晩年の風景画でもその風景画家としての本領が発揮されています。<BR/>款記から文化9年の京都滞在中に描いた作品とわかりますが、これは江戸から関西への道中に目にした景色なのでしょう。富士の巨大な山塊と、その麓にのびやかに広がる田園が、空気遠近法的な壮大な空間を感じさせます。これとは対象的に、前景にはほのぼのとした民家が描かれ、「写実の追求」というモットーだけでは収まらない、この画家の懐の深さを感じさせます。<br/><br/>【江戸の絵画】If you were to see this painting without knowing the artist's name or seeing his signature, many people would mistake it for a post-modern work. The author, Shiba Jianghan (1747-1818), was a painter in the Edo period (1603-1868), who earned the title of "Western-style painter," but he showed his true potential as a landscape painter in his later years, when he was away from copperplate engraving and oil painting. <BR/>The inscription on the back of the picture indicates that it was painted during his stay in Kyoto in Bunka 9, and it is likely that this is a scene he saw on his way from Edo to Kansai. The huge mass of Mt. Fuji and the fields stretching out at its foot give the viewer a sense of aerial perspective and grand space. On the contrary, the peaceful house in the foreground shows the depth of the artist's spirit, which is not confined to the motto "pursuit of realism. <br/><br/>Paintings of Edo
