- 司馬江漢と並んで江戸後期を代表する洋風画家・亜欧堂田善は、地図・医学書挿図などの実用的図像のほかに、舶来のヨーロッパ製銅版画を模写・再構成した異国風景、江戸の名所風景など、多くの作品を腐蝕銅版画（エッチング）に描きました。特に江戸の風景を扱ったものは、現在のところ、「特大形」１種類、「大形」10種類、「中形」5種類、「小形」25種類、その他4種類の作例が知られてきました。ただし「大型」に分類される、カタカナで表題を記した江戸風景図などについては、その作風や技法が明らかに異なるため田善作としては認められません。このような亜流作が銅版で作られるほど、田善の江戸名所図は当時高い人気を集めました。<BR/>ここに展示した司馬江漢、亜欧堂田善の銅版画は色つきのものが多くあります。この色彩部分は銅版印刷ではなく、印刷後に筆で塗り加えられたものです。銅版で刷られたのはあくまでも、墨色の線描部分だけと考えてください。これらの彩色が、いつ、誰の手によって為されたかは明らかではありませんが、ひとつだけ確かなことは、現存する司馬江漢の銅版画は彩色つきのものが大半だという点です。これらは線描部分の抑揚が乏しく、平行線やハッチングの密度も厳密に制御されているとは言えません。風景画として完成させるためには、どうしても筆彩による色彩効果を加える必要があったわけです。これに対して田善の場合は、完璧にコントロールされた線描技術を取得していたため、モノクロのエッチングだけでも充分に写実的な空間表現が可能だったのです。<BR/><br/><br/>【江戸の絵画】Along with Shiba Jianghan, Aodo Tazen, a Western-style painter representing the late Edo period, produced many works in corroded copperplate etching, including maps, illustrations for medical books, and other practical iconography, as well as exotic landscapes copied and reconstructed from imported European copperplate engravings, and famous Edo landscapes. Especially for those dealing with Edo landscapes, one "extra-large" type, 10 "large" types, 5 "medium" types, 25 "small" types, and 4 other types are known at present. However, the "large" category, which includes Edo landscapes with katakana titles, is not recognized as a Tazen work, as its style and technique are clearly different from the others. The more such sub-titles were produced in copperplate format, the more popular Tenzen's Edo Meisho Zu became at the time. <BR/>Many of the copperplate prints by Shiba Jianghan and Aoudo Denzen exhibited here are colored. These colored parts were not printed by copperplate engraving, but were added by brush after printing. Please consider that only the ink-colored linework portions were printed by copperplate. It is not clear when and by whose hand these colors were applied, but one thing is certain: most of the copperplate prints by Shiba Jianghan that have survived have been colored. The linework in these prints is not well defined, and the density of the parallel lines and hatching is not strictly controlled. In order to complete the painting as a landscape, it was necessary to add color effects with brush strokes. In contrast, in the case of Denzel, he had acquired a perfectly controlled line drawing technique, which enabled him to create realistic spatial expressions with black-and-white etchings alone. <BR/><BR/><BR/>[Painting in Edo
