Description: This work was taken during his first visit to Paris. This is probably a distant view of Paris from a high vantage point. There is a thick horizontal line and an oval line in the lower right corner of the near view at the bottom of the picture, suggesting that the artist may be looking at the city through a fence or people, and if so, the view may be from the Eiffel Tower. In his late teens in his hometown of Gifu, Japan, Murakami was strongly impressed by Yuzo Saeki's landscape paintings used in calendar pictures, and he must have been quite happy to finally encounter Saeki's Paris, which produced a succession of masterpieces. Although there are some bright vermilion colors scattered throughout the painting, the majority of the colors are browns and deep greens, which seem to accurately represent the colors of Parisians living in good taste amidst a forest of historical buildings.
