- 作品解説: 日光街道とあることから、描かれているのは杉並木であろう。典型的な日光街道を描いた絵画では、両端に杉並木があり、真ん中に道がまっすぐと続く様だが、村上の視点は片側の杉並木のみに注がれている。ゴッホの糸杉同様、植物全体から漲るエネルギーそのものを絵画化する試みであろうが、ゴッホのような洗練された様式からはほど遠い、原始的な荒々しさがこの作品の魅力となっている。Description: The name "Nikko Kaido" suggests that this painting depicts a road lined with cedar trees. In a typical painting of Nikko Kaido, there are rows of cedar trees at both ends and a straight road running down the middle, but Murakami's perspective is focused only on the rows of cedar trees on one side. Like Van Gogh's cypress trees, Murakami's painting is an attempt to capture the energy that pervades the entire plant, but far from the refined style of Van Gogh, the primitive roughness of this work is what makes it so appealing.
