Description: Lanka Maruyama is known as a painter fascinated by alpine plants and flowers. This work is another example of his fascination with flowers, and the diagonal composition of the diagonal lines across the picture plane is a clear indication of his attention to detail. The vivid white flowers are kept in check in some places to achieve harmony throughout the work. Maruyama was introduced to Katsumi Miyake by the painter and printmaker Hiroshi Yoshida, and at Miyake's suggestion, Maruyama went to the U.S. His watercolors sold well there, and he later went to Europe. Influenced by Maruyama, Miyake moved to Komoro, Nagano Prefecture, for a period of time the year after his return from his first trip to Europe, and painted the nature of Nagano.
