- 作品解説: 三宅克己は2度の徴兵により従軍している。その最初が1895（明治28）年、20歳のときの日清戦争への従軍で、中国北東部の最前線で転戦、一命をとりとめた。二度目は翌年5月から1年間の朝鮮での勤務であった。おそらく本作は最初の従軍の際のスケッチで、麻布歩兵第一聯隊内を描いたものと思われる。蓮池内にある藤棚の欄干に二人の青年が腰かけていて、束の間の休息を楽しんでいる様子がうかがえる。描き方は岡田三郎助ら大野塾で学んだ画家たちとの共通点があり、かつて大野幸彦が学んだ工部美術学校の指導が三宅ら次の世代の画家たちにも影響を与えていることがわかる。Description: Katsumi Miyake was drafted into the military twice. The first was in 1895, when he was 20 years old, during the Sino-Japanese War, in which he fought on the front lines in northeastern China and survived. The second was a year of service in Korea beginning in May of the following year. This work is probably a sketch from his first service, depicting the inside of the 1st Azabu Infantry Regiment. Two young men are sitting on the parapet of a wisteria trellis in a lotus pond, enjoying a brief respite. The manner of painting has something in common with painters who studied at the Ohno Juku, such as Sabrosuke Okada, indicating that the instruction at the Koubu School of Fine Arts, where Yukihiko Ohno once studied, influenced the next generation of painters, including Miyake.
