- 作品解説: 倫敦郊外という題名は掛軸の蓋に書かれた自筆文字に由来する。オレンジ色の屋根の民家の前には農夫らしき人物が歩きながら家の中を覗いているようにみえる。あるいは中の誰かと挨拶でも交わしているのかもしれない。木々のむこうに見える尖塔のある建物は教会であろうか。掛軸という縦長の画面であるがゆえに空を大きく配し、手前の道や小川もゆったりと描かれている。イギリスの湿潤な雰囲気が良く出ている作品である。石川欽一郎は大蔵省印刷局時代に石井柏亭と知り合い、石川が水彩画家の道へすすむ決意をした際、かつて三宅克己から譲り受けた油絵具のセットを石井柏亭に譲り、当時17歳の石井は初めて油彩画を描くことができた。Description: The title "London Suburbs" is derived from the autograph inscription on the cover of the hanging scroll. In front of an orange-roofed house, a farmer-like figure appears to be walking and peering into the house. Perhaps he is exchanging greetings with someone inside. The building with a steeple seen beyond the trees may be a church. Because of the verticality of the hanging scroll, the sky is placed large, and the road and stream in the foreground are also depicted in a relaxed manner. The humid atmosphere of England is well expressed in this work. Kinichiro Ishikawa became acquainted with Kashiwatei Ishii when he was working at the Printing Bureau of the Ministry of Finance. When Ishikawa decided to become a watercolorist, Kashiwatei gave him a set of oil paints that Katsumi Miyake had given him, allowing the then 17-year-old Ishii to paint his first oil paintings.
