(中日新聞掲載)Description: A few fishing boats in a sky lightly covered with clouds, and a house covered with trees on the shore, close to the sea. The early morning fishing had probably finished. The slight ripples on the surface of the sea create a sense of calm. The artist's brush is thick and moist, and instead of painting shapes firmly, he uses broad lines to bring each object softly to life. Perhaps because of this, the viewer is drawn into the painting without any resistance. Ishii Kakutei worked on many watercolor paintings as well as oil paintings. The art organization he founded in 1936, Issuikai, was named after the phrase "Ten days, one drop of water, five days, one stone" from "Kaishienga Den," a technique book published in the Qing Dynasty. It takes five days to paint one stone and ten days to paint the water of a river. Only through rigorous and continuous effort can one reach the realm of freedom. The inexpressible lyricism in this painting is based on such training. (Published in the Chunichi Shimbun newspaper)
