- 作品解説: 1901 年に大下藤次郎が 『水彩画の栞』を出版した頃から日本では水彩画の大ブームが起こったが、そのもう１人の牽引役がこの三宅克己であった。三宅は 1902 年に英仏から帰朝してのちは、『文章世界』 をはじめとする雑誌の挿絵や水彩画絵葉書の制作に多忙を極め、一方で 1905 年には 『水彩画手引』、翌年には 『旅行とスケッチ』、翌々年には 『水彩画指南』 を出版。一方で1907 年からはじまった文部省美術展覧会に出品するなど、本作品が制作された時期は特に充実した生活を送っていた。晩年近くの作品にみられる等幅の筆を用いたタッチの集積ではなく、黄色や茶色などを画面の色の分布を大きく捉えて下塗りし、その上に徐々に細部へと進む描き方がなされている。Description: The publication of "Watercolor Bookmark" by Oshita Tojiro in 1901 triggered a huge boom in watercolor painting in Japan, and Miyake Katsumi was another driving force behind this boom. After returning from France in 1902, Miyake was extremely busy producing illustrations for magazines such as "Shonten Sekai" and watercolor postcards, while publishing "Handbook of Watercolor Painting" in 1905, "Travels and Sketches" the following year, and "Watercolor Painting Manual" the year after that. He was also busy exhibiting his works at the Ministry of Education's art exhibitions that began in 1907, and led a particularly full life during the period when this work was produced. Rather than the monochromatic brushstrokes seen in his later works, the artist painted in yellow and brown underpainting to capture the distribution of colors on the canvas, and then gradually progressed to the finer details.
