- 作品解説: 東京国立博物館には、本作品の元となる板絵の小品《ベニス》（15.0×53.5㎝）が所蔵されている。同じ横長の画面だが、縦横の比率が異なり、それに伴って、右の建物のアーチの形状や帆船の位置や沖合の風景などが変更されている。川村清雄は1876年から1881年までヴェネツィアに滞在し、ヴェネツィア美術学校で学んでいたので、本作は帰国後に当時の風景を思い出して描いたことになる。比率を変更したのは、日本家屋の欄間の位置に飾るのに適した横長の画面ではなく、洋館や展示会場用として本作が考えられていたからではないだろうか。Description: The Tokyo National Museum has in its collection the original small painting on panel "Venice" (15.0 x 53.5 cm), which is the basis for this work. It is the same horizontal screen, but the proportions of length and width are different, and accordingly, the shape of the arch of the building on the right, the position of the sailing ship, and the offshore scenery have been changed. Kiyoo Kawamura stayed in Venice from 1876 to 1881 and studied at the Venice Art School, so this work was painted after his return to Japan, recalling the landscape of the time. The reason for the change in proportions may be that this work was conceived for a Western-style house or exhibition hall, rather than a horizontal screen suitable for display in a Japanese house's transom position.
