Description: The thirteen-story stone pagoda on Ukishima, an artificial island in the Uji River, is depicted on the left, with the Uji Bridge visible beyond. The 15.2-meter stone pagoda was designated a National Important Cultural Property in the same year that Nakazawa painted this work. It is said that in the late Kamakura period (1185-1333), the monk Eison built this artificial island when he renovated the Uji Bridge, and built this large pagoda as a memorial to the spirits of fish caught in the Uji River and as a prayer for the safety of the bridge. The number of pagodas is accurate, and even the reflection of the pagoda in the puddle of water on the riverbank is depicted without missing it.
