- 作品解説: 比較的短い線と彩色で、セザンヌのように部分と全体を考慮しながら画面の様々な場所を同時に描き進めている。もちろん遠近感や明暗などが意識されているが、この水彩画では、なによりも風景全体を構造的に把握し絵画化しようとしているようだ。 二〇世紀の美術に多大な影響を与え、近代美術の父とまで言われるポール・セザンヌ。「自然を円筒形と球形と円錐形によって扱い、すべてを遠近法のなかに入れなさい。」という言葉を晩年に残した。 セザンヌについては雑誌『白樺』などを通じて日本にも紹介され、大正から昭和にかけての画家たちは「絵画とは何か?」「造形とはなにか?」について彼から多くを学び、考えた。 三九歳という若さで亡くなった今西のこの水彩画にもセザンヌの影響が見て取れる。複雑で描くのが難しそうな写生場所を敢えて選び、それぞれを単純なかたちと色彩でとらえ整理することで、しっかりとした構造の絵画に仕上げている。 この絵のどの一部分を抜き取ってみても絵として自立していること、周囲の余白が見る人の想像力をかき立てているところなど、絵画の極意と効果をよく理解している今西だからこそなし得た作品である。 (サイトウミュージアム学芸員 田中善明)Description: With relatively short lines and colors, the artist, like Cézanne, paints various parts of the picture plane simultaneously, taking into account the parts and the whole. Of course, he is conscious of perspective, light and dark, etc., but in this watercolor, he seems to be trying to grasp the entire landscape structurally and to make it into a painting. Paul Cézanne had a great influence on 20th century art and is even called the father of modern art. In his later years, he said, "Treat nature in terms of cylinders, spheres, and cones, and put everything into perspective. He left this saying in his later years. Cézanne was introduced to Japan through the magazine "Shirakaba" and other publications, and painters from the Taisho to the Showa period were asked "What is painting? What is painting? and "What is painting? The influence of Cézanne can be seen in this watercolor by Imanishi, who died at the young age of 39. Imanishi dared to choose locations in the painting that looked complicated and difficult to paint, and by capturing and organizing them with simple shapes and colors, he created a painting with a solid structure. The fact that any part of this painting can stand on its own as a painting, and that the surrounding blank space stimulates the viewer's imagination, are examples of how Imanishi, with his thorough understanding of the art of painting and its effects, has been able to create this work.
