- 「西画指南」は冬崖川上寛の纂訳によって木版で公刊された最初の西洋画指導書。前篇（上下2冊）は序文に，「原本ハ千八百五十七年，鐫行英人ロベルト・スコットボルン氏の著ハセシ訓蒙ノ小冊子」とある通りRobert Scott BurnのThe Illustrations Drawing Book（1852年初版）により明治4年に，後篇（上下2冊附図1冊）はオランダ人の著書より翻訳，明治8年文部省より刊行された。The first woodblock-printed instructional guide to Western painting, translated and published by Kawakami Hiroshi Fuyugi. The first part (two volumes) was translated from The Illustrations Drawing Book (first published in 1852) by Robert Scott Burn in 1871, and the second part (two volumes with one illustration) was translated from the Dutchman's book and published by the Ministry of Education in 1875. The second part (two volumes, upper and lower, with one illustration) was translated from a book by a Dutchman and published by the Ministry of Education in 1875.
